Abstract. We define a vertex operator associated with Jack functions. The products of the coefficients of this vertex operator form a basis of symmetric functions. This basis includes Jack functions labeled by partitions of rectangular shapes. On the other hand, based on a generalization of Newton's identity, we construct a vertex operator which diagonalizes Macdonald functions.
