Abstract. How long does it take for a simple random walk on a large d-dimensional discrete torus to disconnect the torus? Despite sizeable effort, the answer is still "We do not know."
In my talk I will survey the recent development in answering this question, evolving around the random interlacement model, a dependent percolation on Z^d, which describes the microscopic texture left by the random walk on the torus.
