Abstract. Thanks to Désiré André (1881) the coefficients of the Taylor expansions of tangent and secant have been given a handy combinatorial interpretation in terms of alternating permutations. Since then, the geometry of those permutations has been used to build up a combinatorial theory of the q-trigonometric series, and more recently of the q-derivative polynomials.
